Hello I am Susie Hammond, Welcome to my webpage . I'm a Suffolk 'born and bred' Artist ; my childhood was idyllic, nurtured in the tiny farming village of Iken on The River Alde in Suffolk, I was formally trained in Theatre , and latterly Garden Design and Construction, with a love for the English Countryside, in all its wild and varied forms and the culture that derives from it. Having travelled extensively, I lived in Australia for a few years, but somehow, I always found myself drawn back to my starting point and I now live very happily just a few miles away from where I spent my early childhood.I have always been influenced by my surroundings, I try to work outside everyday, in all the elements , and I sometimes feel that I am part of the Earth and all that is on it, I try to recreate this in what I do. I find enormous pleasure in simple beautiful things, flora and fauna; the curl of a ferns' frond, a fallen Oak leaf or acorn, soft grasses, their curves and tendrils, the strength of a tree, the texture of the woodland floor, the local Heathlands' brackens and brambles, the soft and the sharp, the wind and the clouds, I draw or paint these wonderful images to try and give a visual key to my feelings. I enjoy all the local myths and legends which are a part of my upbringing, The Merman of Orford, give way to my Siren Series, Yarn Hill at Iken, the myth of The Icenii Tribe with their Queen Boadicea, give me my Mother Nature Series, The Gazing Hares I see in the Moonlight , the dancing Hares in the fields of turf around my village, the sheltering Hares just inside the edge of a wood, all have an immense fuelling of creativity for me with their myths and legends that go back throughout the ages. My Suffolk Sheep Illustrations, are a beautiful flock that belong to a local Landlady in Snape, they feed off the salt marshes near to where I work, their faces so black, no eyes can be seen, unless of course you are very, very close to them.I offer a selection of original works, limited edition prints, greetings cards mugs, coasters and bags.
